Why Build a Peace Dollar Collection?

Novice collectors often approach us for insights on a good coin series to collect when starting out. As a trusted Grand Rapids coin dealer, we’ve given that question a fair amount of thought. While there are many good options (U.S. pennies being a perennial favorite that is skyrocketing in popularity right now after the recent Treasury halt in production), we often recommend that new and intermediate collectors build a Peace Dollar collection.

The History Behind Peace Dollars

Peace dollars, designed by Anthony de Francisci, were minted to commemorate the end of World War I. Issued from 1921 to 1928 and again from 1934 to 1935, these silver dollars represent the strong pacifist sentiment that followed the war. They feature an eagle with folded wings looking toward the sunrise and the word “PEACE” on the lower reverse. On the obverse, the inscription “IN GOD WE TRVST” uses the classical Roman “V” in place of a “U.”

These dollars were introduced to replace the large number of Morgan dollars converted to bullion during World War I. While Peace Dollars aren’t as widely collected as Morgans, they’ve grown steadily in popularity and for good reason. There are several compelling benefits to building a Peace Dollar collection.

Why Peace Dollars Are Ideal for Collectors

  • Silver Content Adds Bullion Value
Peace dollars are composed of 90% silver, making them a tangible store of value as well as a collectible.

  • Manageable Set Size
There are only 24 coins in the entire date/mint series, making it an achievable goal for new collectors. You could complete the set in two years by acquiring just one coin per month.

  • Affordability
Many Peace dollars are still relatively inexpensive, which means you can assemble a meaningful collection without a huge upfront investment.

  • Historic and Aesthetic Appeal
With their striking imagery and historic significance, Peace dollars are a beautiful and meaningful addition to any collection.

Key Dates and Varieties to Know

While the series is generally accessible, a few dates and varieties add intrigue. The 1928 Peace dollar is considered the lone “key date” in the set and carries a higher price in all conditions. That said, Peace dollars are not heavily counterfeited, unlike some rarer pennies.

Collectors who enjoy going deeper may pursue varieties once the main set is complete. For example, certain 1934-D Peace dollars feature a “doubled die” variety, with multiple rays visible on the obverse behind Lady Liberty’s tiara—a prized discovery for variety hunters.
